Forget the pre-series polite talk. The puck has already been on the ice for two games, the Stanley Cup Finals are deadlocked, and the betting lines in our living room are officially open!!
With Andy’s Blackhawks and my Stars watching from the golf course, we’ve done what we always do when our teams are out: we pick a side and start placing our friendly at-home wagers for who will take the ultimate prize.
Andy is laying his money down on the Vegas Golden Knights, while I am riding with the storm and pulling for the Carolina Hurricanes. With the series tied 1-1 and shifting to Vegas tonight for Game 3, the stakes are officially heating up.
🎲 Andy’s Take: The Vegas Jackpot
Andy: If you looked at my pre-series notes, I was all-in on Vegas’s depth and heavy, relentless transition hockey. When the Golden Knights took Game 1 with that gritty 5-4 win, I felt pretty good about my investment. Even in Game 2, when they jumped out to a 2-0 lead, I was practically ready to collect my winnings.
My stance hasn’t changed: Vegas’s size on the blue line and their ability to roll four lines without dropping their speed is going to be too much for Carolina over a long seven-game stretch. They stole home-ice advantage in Raleigh, and now they get to protect it in the desert.
🌀 Leesl’s Take: The Hurricane Warning
Leesl: Andy was looking entirely too confident during the first two periods of Game 2, but this Carolina team doesn’t know how to quit. Trailing 2-0 in the third, the Hurricanes’ suffocating, aggressive forecheck completely took over the ice. Pushing that game to overtime and burying the game-winner for a 4-3 victory is exactly why I picked them.
They thrive on high-pressure situations, dominate special teams, and simply refuse to be outhustled. Vegas might have the size, but Carolina counters that with a fast, disruptive style that forces opponents into making panicky mistakes.
⛸️ Finding the Edge: Which Team Can Take Command in Game 3?
With the series shifting back to Vegas tonight, the battle for momentum boils down to who can adjust the fastest.
Andy: Going into this series, I would have bet the house on low-scoring, 2-1 or 1-0 absolute defensive grinds. Both of these squads have phenomenal blue lines. Instead? We’ve seen a mind-blowing 16 goals scored in just two games. The ice is wide open, but that high-scoring trend stops tonight.
Game 3 will come down to the goaltending, and while I’m cheering for the VGK, I am actually giving the edge to Carolina here. Frederik Andersen has the veteran playoff experience over Carter Hart, and in a hostile road environment, that calm, seasoned presence in the crease is everything.
Speaking of the environment, the Vegas crowd is going to be deafening tonight. Carolina has to survive that initial wave of energy. And keep an eye on special teams: yes, the penalties have been critical, and surprisingly, the penalty kills completely dominated regulation in Game 2. But that stalemate won’t last. The power plays are going to break through tonight, and whoever capitalizes first takes the series lead. (And yes, I am fully aware I just praised your team, so don’t get used to it!) Go Knights Go!
Leesl: I’ll write down the date and time of Andy actually praising my pick later, but for now, he’s spot on about the goaltending. Andersen’s experience is huge, but Carolina’s skaters have to help him out by silencing The Fortress early. The Canes momentum is great, but surviving the desert heat means playing like a giant hockey pig is personally judging your performance from North Carolina. If they can establish that heavy, aggressive forecheck in the first ten minutes, they can take the Vegas crowd right out of the game and force the Golden Knights into making the exact mistakes that cost them Game 2. It’s going to be an absolute storm surge on ice. And when Vegas hits the box, I will be cheering Cheaters Never Win!
We want to hear from you! Are you rolling the dice on the Knights at home, or betting it all on a Carolina storm? 🗣️
