Leesl: Well, I’ll tell you what—my Texas Two-Step just turned into a solo. I was fixin’ to brag on my teams winning Round 1 to all get out. But unfortunately, my Stars just stumbled over their own boots—or skates. Looks like the Spurs are the only ones left who still know the steps.

Let’s get down to brass tacks:

Step 1: The Dallas Stars vs. Minnesota Wild

The Wild effectively “out-starred” Dallas by controlling puck battles and forcing mistakes, capitalizing on a lopsided Game 1 win to set the tempo for a series where the Stars failed to find the necessary desperation to save their season.

The Breakdown:

  • The 5-on-5 Ghost: The most staggering stat? The Stars went a whoppin’ 254:01 minutes without an even-strength goal. You can’t win in the postseason if you only score when the other team is in the box.
  • The Scoring Gap: Before Thursday night, their last 5-on-5 goal was in the first period of Game 3—meaning they went over three full games without scoring at even strength.
  • Hunger vs. Hustle: Minnesota outscored Dallas 14-4 at even strength. They simply looked like the hungrier team, capitalizing on defensive breakdowns at the worst possible times.
  • Defensive Timing: While our Power Play was elite (10 goals in 6 games), the defense let us down with ill-timed goals allowed at the worst possible moments.

When the Stars play poor defense like this, they look like a line dancer going left when everyone else goes right—uncoordinated and breaking the pattern. It’s a bitter pill to swallow because we know this team has the talent. But for me, the real takeaway is that the Stars’ identity got lost in the shuffle. We became a team that survived on the Power Play instead of a team that dictated the pace. Minnesota didn’t necessarily out-talent us; they just stayed in their line while we kept missing our cues.

Now, the skates go in the closet, and the focus shifts to whether this roster needs a new lead or just a better set of instructions for next season.

Step 2: The San Antonio Spurs vs. Portland Trail Blazers

While the ice in Dallas has melted, the hardwood in San Antonio is just heating up. The Spurs didn’t just win their series against the Trail Blazers; they set the rhythm from start to finish, closing things out in five games to ensure no one had to make another long flight back to Portland.

The Breakdown:

  • The Wemby Impact: Wembanyama dominated the series, becoming the first player since 1994 to record consecutive double-doubles with 6+ blocks in the playoffs. Our hearts collectively stopped in Game 2 when Victor Wembanyama went down. It looked scary, but in true “Wemby” fashion, he only missed one game before returning with a 27-point, 11-rebound, 7-block performance in Game 4.
  • No Wemby? No Problem: With our star sidelined for a moment, Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper showed they could lead the dance, combining for a staggering 70 points, 12 rebounds and 8 assists in a massive win that proved this team has depth, not just height.
  • Historic Comeback: In Game 4, the Spurs became the first team in NBA playoff history to trail by 15+ points at halftime and win by 15+.
  • Balanced Scoring: The Spurs proved their depth with six players averaging double figures, including strong performances from Dylan Harper, Devin Vassell, and Julian Champagnie.

There’s an old saying that some folks see swagger, but in Texas, we just call it walking. Well, the Spurs are walking tall into the second round for the first time in nine years. They handled Portland like they’ve been here before, proving that while they might be young, they’ve got that “no retreat, no surrender” mindset that makes this state proud. The dance continues, and this time, we’re the ones leading.

Now, let’s hear what the fella from Chicago has to say:

Andy’s Two Bits:

Andy: As we wrap up this post series, I just want to remind Leesl that it was very gracious for my Chicago teams to let Texas handle the postseason stress this year while they catch up on some much-needed rest!

Definitely not slowing down, these teams are pulling out all the stops and are absolutely on my watch list:

  • From “Dominant” to “Desperate”: Last week, I was ready to crown the Pistons as the kings of the East. I called them a machine, but someone clearly forgot to oil the gears! After falling into a 3-1 hole against the Magic, Detroit had to claw back with two straight wins just to force a Game 7 this Sunday. The road to the Finals still goes through the Motor City, but right now, it’s a bumpy one. My apologies to Orlando fans—they’ve got more “magic” in the tank than I gave them credit for.
  • The Boston-Philly Brawl: I’m watching the Celtics vs. 76ers Game 7 tonight. It’s the ultimate toss-up. Philly has been relentless, but Boston at home in a Game 7 is a different beast. This is the kind of stress I’m glad to just watch from the sidelines.
  • Round 2 Showdown: SA vs. MIN: The 2026 Western Conference Semifinals matchup between the San Antonio Spurs and Minnesota Timberwolves will be a clash of top-tier defense and youth versus experience, featuring a premier duel between French stars Victor Wembanyama and Rudy Gobert. While Minnesota is a physically intimidating, experienced team, they are battling injuries to stars like Anthony Edwards (hyperextended knee) and the loss of Donte Divincenzo, making this high-stakes series a “daunting task” for them against a rested Spurs squad.

While Leesl’s Texas Two-Step coverage may be over, the playoffs are entering the best part of the season. The buzzer hasn’t sounded yet—the defining moments of the NBA/NHL playoffs are just getting started. More to come soon! 🔜

But, what about you? Hockey or Hoops? Let us know which team you are cheering for, and why they are going all the way! 🗣️
