Welcome back to Thin Ice!

The calendar has turned to April, and in the hockey world, that means the ice is getting thinner by the second. With the regular season finale looming on April 16th, the league is splitting into two very different worlds: the “Clinched” and the “Clinging.”

We’re witnessing a fascinating shift in the NHL’s hierarchy right now. Old-guard fanbases in Buffalo and Detroit are finally seeing their patience pay off; the Sabres are charging toward their first post-season appearance since 2011, while the Red Wings are fighting tooth and nail to end a nine-season drought. It’s a total shake-up of the status quo—depending on how these final ten games shake out, we could see as many as ten teams in the playoffs who weren’t even in the conversation last year.

Currently, only Colorado and Dallas have officially punched their tickets. Meanwhile, teams like Tampa, Carolina, and Minnesota are virtual locks, leaving a cluster of nine other teams within a razor-thin 5-point margin for those final wildcard spots.

Star Gazing vs. Wishful Thinking 🔭⭐

Leesl: While Andy is busy staring at the ceiling and trying to manifest the perfect bounce of a lottery ping pong ball, my Stars are officially star gazing at the top of the Central! We’ve already clinched our spot, but I’ll be honest—the view from the top is a little dizzying lately. Since the trade deadline, we’ve been a total roller coaster, going 6-7 overall with win streaks and skids that have our heads spinning. 🎢

The real challenge right now isn’t the talent; it’s the revolving door at the trainer’s office. We finally welcomed Mikko Rantanen back (The Moose is loose! 🫎), but we’re still waiting on Roope Hintz and Radek Faksa to return from those Olympic battle scars. We did get some good news that Bunting and Bastian might be back in the lineup sooner than expected, which is a huge relief since we just lost Myers and Steel this week. 🩹

If we can get this roster healthy and out of the “injured reserve” blues by mid-April, the rest of the Western Conference should be very nervous. We’re chasing the Presidents’ Trophy for the league’s best record, and we’ve got the grit—we just need the bodies!

And the home of the… STARS! 🌟

Andy: Alright, Leesl, I’ll take the ping pong ball joke—for now. But remember, those lottery balls eventually turn into superstars, and while you’re “star gazing” at the standings, I’m scouting the next generation that’s going to be haunting your nightmares in a couple of years!

Since the March 6th trade deadline, my Blackhawks have definitely been playing “rebuild roulette.” We are officially the youngest roster in the league, and the growing pains are showing. We’ve gone 4-9 since the deadline, dropping three straight while giving up 35+ shots on goal like they’re party favors. 🥅🏒 🎉

It’s been a long road since our last deep run in 2017, and “potential” is a word that’s starting to wear thin for us fans. We have 8 games left, and I’m just looking for these young guys to show some heart and finish strong so we can head into the offseason with some actual momentum instead of just “what-ifs.”

Cue the anthem and bring the noise! GO HAWKS! 📣

While the top of the standings is starting to settle, the race for the final wildcard spots has turned into an absolute “Royal Rumble.” We are keeping a close eye on the Eastern Conference, where Detroit, Ottawa, and Philadelphia are currently locked in a three-way tie in the points column. ⚔️

Every single game is basically a “Game 7” for these squads right now. One bad bounce or an unlucky penalty could be the difference between a playoff run and an early summer vacation. 🏝️

Our Prediction: If Buffalo finally snaps their drought and clinches this week, the atmosphere in that arena is going to be the biggest story of the first round. 🦬✨
