Welcome back to Thin Ice! 🏒

As the NHL enters the Olympic freeze, the league-wide standings are telling two very different stories. For some, the mid-season air is crisp and full of playoff hope; for others, the heat is on as their preseason expectations begin to evaporate. Before the focus shifts to Italy, it’s time to check the gauge on the teams that have redefined the standings—for better or for worse.

The Surprises: Turning Up the Heat! 🔥

Detroit Red Wings: Going into October, the consensus was that Detroit was a fringe playoff team at best. Fast forward to February, and they aren’t just in the mix—they’re sitting on the 3rd most points in the Eastern Conference. The “DeBrincat-Raymond-Larkin” engine is firing on all cylinders, keeping Detroit in every single contest (as evidenced by a razor-thin 2-goal differential through 57 games). While the roster is young, the veteran presence of Patrick Kane and James Van Riemsdyk has been the stabilizing force they needed. Perhaps most importantly, the crease is locked down by John Gibson and Cam Talbot—a duo with 26 years of combined NHL wisdom that is finally paying dividends for Hockeytown.

Anaheim Ducks: The Ducks have officially graduated from “rebuilding” to “relevant.” Currently 3rd in the Pacific and 6th in the West, Anaheim is doing it with a youth movement that would make a college team blush (10 players under 24). Led by the excellently named Cutter Gauthier, the Ducks boast a balanced attack with 10 players already eclipsing the 22-point mark. Under Joel Quenneville and the veteran leadership of Chris Kreider, this team has learned how to weather the storm. They started white-hot (11-3-1), survived a mid-season lull, and are now charging into the break 8-2 in their last ten. After a seven-year drought, the playoffs aren’t just a dream in Orange County—they’re an expectation.

The Disappointments: Left Out in the Cold! 🥶

Winnipeg Jets: Talk about a sudden cold snap. The Jets have plummeted from Presidents’ Trophy winners in 2024-25 to the 5th-worst record in the league. While roster turnover played a part, nobody expected the offense to go stone-cold like this. They’ve dropped from 3rd to 23rd in goals per game, and the defense has slipped from the league’s gold standard to a middling 15th. Sitting 11 points out of a wildcard spot, the Jets are staring at a historic collapse—only four prior Presidents’ Trophy winners have ever missed the playoffs the following year.

New York Rangers: The temperature in Manhattan has reached a freezing point. Following last year’s late-season collapse, the Rangers have spiraled into a second season of misery. They currently hold the 3rd fewest points in the NHL and a staggering -27 goal differential. The vibes at Madison Square Garden are icy, evidenced by the trade of a disgruntled Artemi Panarin. With the Olympic break acting as a mandatory “cool down” period, you have to wonder if the front office is about to put even more veterans on ice.

🏠 Home Ice: The Central Division Check-In

While Thin Ice has expanded to cover the biggest stories across the NHL, we never lose sight of where our loyalties lie. Every week, we bring it back home to the two teams we live and die by: the Dallas Stars and the Chicago Blackhawks.

Blackhawks: Shivering Through the Slump

Andy: This was a rough week for the Windy City. We went 1-4, and honestly, we should have walked away with two more wins if we could just finish. We had Minnesota on the ropes with a 3-0 lead, only to let them climb back and steal it in a shootout. Then against Pittsburgh, we were tied after one, only to surrender four goals in the second period. We did manage a 6-3 win over a road-weary Sharks team, but the underlying numbers are scary—we’re getting outshot 45-20 by the Pens and currently rank 31st in the league in shots. We need this Olympic break to regroup, because for my Hawks, the ice is getting thinner with every loss.

Stars: Blazing into the Break

Leesl: Sorry about your luck, Andy (okay, maybe not that sorry!). My Stars just turned in a perfect 5-0 week. We outshot the opposition in nearly every game, and the power play is absolutely lethal right now, racking up five more goals this week. When you have this much firepower, the strategy is simple: put the puck on the net and good things happen. Unlike the Hawks, the Olympic break is actually coming at a bad time for Dallas. We’re on a 5-game heater with the 3rd best record in the league. The goal now? Hope the guys going to Italy stay healthy and the guys staying home stay hungry. For the Stars, the ice is rock solid.

🌡️ Over to You: Check Your Team’s Temperature!

We’ve given you our reading on the Stars and the Hawks, but we want to hear from the rest of the league. Is your team:

  • 🔥 Sizzling: Don’t let the Olympic break slow us down!
  • 🧊 Stone Cold: We need this two-week nap more than anyone.
  • 📉 Melting: We’re one bad week away from a fire sale.

Tell us your team and their current “temp” in the comments! 👇
