Joliet Recap: From Windy City Woes to Lone Star Luxuries

Andy: The homecoming I was looking forward to completely stalled out in Joliet. Any momentum we had vanished before the first lap was even over when Conor Zilisch got caught up in an early wreck, getting credited with zero laps completed. To make a bad day worse, my race-winner pick, Kyle Larson, spun out on his own and got stuck in the infield mud, limping home in 34th place. While Brad Keselowski and Chris Buescher qualified well up front, they fought severe balance issues all day and finished a lap down. Windy City Racin’ is definitely limping out of Illinois.

Leesl: While Andy’s squad was apparently enjoying too many pre-race Old Styles to focus, Lone Star Racin’ rolled into Joliet hungry for redemption—and we found it. We absolutely dominated the day with four drivers finishing inside the top 10, highlighted by Chase Briscoe storming his way straight into Victory Lane! Throwing Denny Hamlin’s pole-winning performance into the mix, we ran away with a massive 73-point weekly win. Winning at a home track is nice, Andy, but breaking hearts on the road is so much sweeter. Off to Georgia we go with a ton of momentum!

Georgia on our Mind: Preparing for the High Banks

The series heads to EchoPark Speedway, a unique 1.54-mile quad-oval that serves up some of the most intense, white-knuckle racing on the calendar. So, what separates this high-banked monster from the intermediate track we just left behind?

• The Superspeedway Transformation: Thanks to its high-profile redesign, Atlanta no longer drives like a traditional 1.5-mile track. With its steep 28-degree banking, it completely mimics the chaotic, drafting-style pack racing of Daytona and Talladega, where one wrong move triggers a massive multi-car pileup.
• The Summer Heat Factor: Unlike the cooler February race, taking on these blistering banks in the dead heat of July means the track surface is slicker, tires will wear faster, and drivers will be sliding around in a 190-mile-per-hour drafting line under the lights.

Leesl: Andy, you can list track stats all day, but the reality is simple: this high-speed venue belongs to Lone Star Racin’. The last time we visited Atlanta in February, my lineup absolutely flexed, placing five drivers in the top ten and pocketing a 131-point victory. I don’t see a single thing changing those results in July. Even though our qualifying runs weren’t spectacular for this weekend, I have total faith in my stable. I am riding with Denny Hamlin to navigate the chaos and park it in Victory Lane.

Andy: Look, being down 498 points with seven weeks before the playoffs means the conservative play is officially out the window—Windy City Racin’ is putting the pedal to the metal. To pull off a massive comeback, I’m leaning heavily on home-track history. Drivers like Ryan Blaney and Kyle Larson have great track records here, but I’m calling on Dawsonville’s own Chase Elliott to use that native Georgia advantage, survive the drafting packs, and secure the trophy.

Leesl: Picking a hometown favorite is sweet, Andy, but Atlanta’s high banks don’t care about nostalgia. Have you already forgotten when you picked Brad in Michigan for the exact same reason and it was a total wreck—literally? It’s chaos out there, and while your team is busy running wide open into trouble, my stable will be playing it smart and banking the points.
