Welcome back to the diamond! If the first month of the season was about shaking off the rust, May has officially become about making a statement. As of today, May 9, 2026, the MLB season is being defined by incredible winning streaks, dominant pitching, and the immediate impact of international stars who are rewriting the script in real-time.
Leesl: In our house, the “Texas vs. Chicago” debate is reaching a fever pitch this weekend. For those who are new here, Andy is a lifelong South Side loyalist—which means when the Cubs roll into Arlington to play my Rangers, it feels like a hostile takeover. Seeing that “North Side” blue filling up Globe Life Field is enough to make a White Sox fan retreat to the kitchen!
But rivalry aside, it’s hard to ignore the noise coming out of both cities. While the Cubs are riding a historic 10-game winning streak, the South Side is buzzing over Munetaka Murakami’s torrid home run pace—he’s already sitting on 15 long balls. Meanwhile, my Rangers are leaning on Josh Jung to find their spark and defend the home turf. It’s a great time to be a fan, even if the “territory” in our living room is a little divided this weekend.

👉 The Curveball!
Sometimes the game throws you a pitch you didn’t see coming. While the highlights are full of home runs and winning streaks, this past week delivered a couple of nasty breaks that have clubhouses across the league scrambling.
Leesl’s Take: I grew up around the Astros, I can still remember stepping into the Astrodome for the first time with my dad. It was like entering another world. When you have that kind of history with a team, you really hate to see the anchor of the franchise go down. Carlos Correa tearing an ankle tendon in a freak hitting cage accident is devastating. With the team already off to a slow start, losing his bat for the year is devastating. He was top three in hits and total bases for the Astros—now it’s time to see if the rest of the lineup can step up or if they’ll buckle under the pressure.
Andy’s Take: My curveball is coming out of Detroit. Tarik Skubal heading for elbow surgery to remove “loose particles” is a gut punch. Missing 2-3 months is a massive loss for the Tigers, especially since he’s the back-to-back Cy Young winner. He’s on a one-year deal, and this being his third surgical procedure in a decade really raises the stakes. Who’s going to offer a long-term deal to a guy with that kind of “mileage” on his arm?

Leesl’s Texas Rangers (17-21):
The Story: It was a frustrating stretch in Arlington this week. While the energy at Globe Life Field was high, we struggled to capitalize on big moments, leaving 37 runners on base during our four losses. You simply can’t leave that much meat on the bone when you’re fighting to stay relevant in the AL West.
Player Spotlight: Josh Jung is finally looking like the cornerstone we know he is. After a quiet April, he’s heating up at the right time, carrying a .305 average into the weekend. His ability to drive the ball into the gaps is exactly what this offense needs to start clearing those loaded bases.
The Box Score: We need to sharpen the situational hitting. The talent is there, but the execution has to follow.
Andy’s Chicago White Sox (17-21):
The Story: For the first time this season, we’ve put together back-to-back winning weeks on the South Side! The roster is finally gelling, and we’re seeing that grit pay off in late-inning situations. If the bullpen can find a way to stay as consistent as the starters, this young team is going to surprise a lot of people.
Player Spotlight: Davis Martin has been a revelation in the rotation. He’s currently sitting on a 5-1 record with a stellar 1.64 ERA. Watching him dismantle lineups with that kind of confidence has been the highlight of my week. He’s exactly what this young pitching staff needed.
The Box Score: We’re trending up. The focus now is maintaining this momentum and not letting the lead slip away.
👉 Swing for the Fences: The Big Bats!
While the $300 million rosters are searching for answers, these guys are providing the results. We’re closing the “Power Gap” with two players who are carrying their teams right now.
- Leesl’s Pick: Alec Burleson (STL). I’m going with an under-the-radar guy who is absolutely carrying the Cardinals right now. Alec is hitting .274 with 6 home runs so far. He’s a huge reason St. Louis is sitting in second place in the NL Central. For a guy playing on a one-year “prove it” contract, he is certainly making his case for a permanent spot in that lineup.
- Andy’s Pick: Byron Buxton (MIN). He’s been with the Twins forever and has dealt with so many injuries, but when he’s healthy, he’s electric. He’s already crushed 12 home runs this season and is batting .255. He even capped off the week with another moonshot against Cleveland. It looks like everything is finally clicking for him in 2026—let’s just hope he stays on the field!
