Stars vs. Blackhawks: Who Holds the Edge?

When the 2025-26 NHL season schedule was released, matchups between the Dallas Stars and Chicago Blackhawks were viewed through vastly different lenses. For Dallas, it was about proving they are still top-tier Stanley Cup contenders. For Chicago, it was a litmus test for a young, rebuilding roster trying to find its footing. Yet, as we look at how the central division rivalry has unfolded, the gap between these two teams isn’t as simple as the standings suggest. Let’s break down how the Stars’ veteran composure is measuring up against the Blackhawks’ growing pains.

Chicago Blackhawks: Young, Fast, and Flu-ish

Andy: Since the calendar flipped to 2026, it’s been a total rollercoaster for my Hawks. We’re sitting at 7-5-1 for the month, but “consistency” isn’t in our vocabulary yet—we’ll rip off four wins in five games, then immediately drop three of the next four. 🎢

We finally survived the locker room flu bug, and having Connor Bedard and Frank Nazar back at full strength is huge, but the “rookie” is still showing. We’re the 3rd youngest team in the league, and it looks like it; one mistake turns into a snowball, and one goal against usually leads to a second one before the announcer even finishes the first name.

The Real Issue: We don’t shoot! We’re 28th in shots on goal, which puts a massive “save us” sign on our goaltending. Our goalies have been playing above average, which is the only reason we aren’t bottom feeding. We only have four players with 10+ goals (led by Bedard and Tyler Bertuzzi), so the scoring balance just isn’t there yet. 🥅✖️

The Silver Lining: Our Penalty Kill is tops in the league, and we’re on pace to finish with 17 more points than last year. With the Olympic Break coming up, these kids need the rest. We’re 5 points out of a playoff spot—it’s a long shot, but the ice isn’t melted yet. 🤞🏟️

Dallas Stars: The Ferrari in the Garage

Leesl: If Andy’s team is on “thin ice,” my Stars are currently on Solid Ice, but man, are they skating slow lately. Since New Year’s, it’s been a struggle to an 4-6-2 record. In those 12 games, we’ve only managed to score 4+ goals three times. For a team with this much firepower, that’s like owning a Ferrari and only driving it to the grocery store. 🏎️

We have the #2 Power Play in the league (29%!), but we’re 27th in shots. We are the kings of the “one extra pass”—we’d rather look for the highlight reel pass than just rip the puck at the net. As a veteran team, we should know better. 🤦‍♀️🏒

The Backbone: Goaltending is excellent again this year (3rd lowest GAA at 2.71), but just like Chicago, we’re top-heavy. Jason Robertson and Wyatt Johnston are carrying the load, but we need the secondary lines to wake up if we want to survive the gauntlet.

The Olympic Factor: We have 7 players heading to Italy for the Games. While the rest of the league gets a vacation, my best guys are going to be grinding for Gold. We’re safely in the playoffs, but an 8-9-4 run since December isn’t exactly “Championship Energy.” 🥇

The Verdict ⛸️

Blackhawks: Definitely on Thin Ice—the playoffs are a “maybe,” and they need a post-Olympic miracle. 🥶

Stars: On Solid Ice—but the ice is getting a bit slushy. They need to start shooting the puck before the playoffs begin. 🧊☀️

We love that our friend LP dropped by to leave us a loud and proud “Go Avalanche!!!” Now, we know Mr. P has been living in Denver for a while, but clearly, that mountain air has caused some serious “Altitude Amnesia.” We remember a version of him that bled Victory Green right here in Dallas! It’s okay, LP—we’ll keep your old Stars jersey ready for when you decide to come back down to sea level. -Andy
